Every year I try to sum things up by giving my top five and bottom five movies of the year. Yes, it's my effort to help you sample the year's best pictures while avoiding the crusty, foul nether-regions. And this year, the bad ones were pretty bad. We had mediocre hideousness like All the Kings Men, and Basic Instinct 2, but even they weren't bad enough to make my list…so now counting them down, here are the worst films of 2006:
Number five is Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj. It's a painful, limp, tired Revenge of the Nerds ripoff with no laughs. Not one.
Number 4 is Let's Go To Prison. I describe it as bland unfunny dreck. Again, a supposed comedy with not a single laugh. It's mean spirited and should be locked up in solitary.
Number Three is Ultraviolet - packed with ultra-cheesy special effects, ultra-atrocious acting and it's all done with a straight face! Ultraviolet is an unintentional laugh riot!
Number Two is Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. I loathed every minute of it. It's a dope movie and you need to be on it to find it funny. It's bad on an astronomical scale.
And now, Number One…Jackass Number Two easily the worst movie of the year…it's only the third ever that I've given zero stars to. It tells you exactly what it is right in the title. It is another vile, gut wrenching, vomitous assault, that many would call criminal.
Now let's move to the best. There were many great movies this year. And it's hard to narrow them all down to the five best. But after much mental homework, these are my five favorites of 2006.
Number Five is The Queen. See The Queen to bask in the glory of a great performance. Helen Mirren is nothing short of amazing. The Queen is an absolute joy to behold.
Number Four is The Pursuit of Happyness. What makes this film a cut above the rest is an amazing Will Smith. He makes this one of the year's best! But the film is truly inspirational.
Number Three is Borat. The best comedy of the year, and the funniest film I've seen in a long time! Sasha Baron Cohen is amazing. I seldom stopped laughing!
Number Two is Apocalypto, Mel Gibson's visceral, non-stop, pulse pounding Mayan thriller. It works on every level and is astounding.
Number One is…Little Miss Sunshine - a very funny, warm and wonderful celebration of life with all its twists and turns. It's filled with terrific performances from the entire cast, This is my favorite film of the year.
If you've missed any of these top five, try and make some time soon to see them. And Happy New year!
