This is the time of year where we gather our thoughts from the previous year, and look ahead to the next. One of my great pleasures is compiling my list of the worst and best films…
Let's get started with the worst first…these are all films to avoid at all costs!
Number 5 on the list is a film that everytime I think about I still wonder why anyone would have paid good money to make it, and pay good money to see it. It's easilly the most boring film of the year, Neal Youngs vanity film, Greendale.
Number 4 was never needed at all, it is a sequel to two other films that weren't needed either, but this movie contains something to offend everyone, Seed of Chucky.
Number 3 is just plain putrid. It made me start to dislike any move Jude Law is in. Alfie
Number 2 easily qualifies as the least funny comedy of the year, Taxi
And the worst movie of the year is…Alexander. It's so bad it is laughable!
Worst
Alexander
Taxi
Alfie
Seed of Chucky
Greendale (Neal Young)
And now here is my list of the 10 best films of the year….there are some notables that don't quite make the list, but still belong here…Super Size me is the best documentary of the year…The Incredibles is hugely entertaining, and Jamie Foxx might be nominated for best supporting actor for his performance in Collateral. Napoleon Dynamite is one of the funniest films of the year and especially cool is it's an Idaho film!
Honorable mentions: Super Size Me ,The Incredibles, Collateral, Napoleon Dynamite
And now my picks for the top ten movies of the year.
Number 10 is another hugely entertaining film from Wes Anderson who last brought us The Royal Tennenbaums. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou is more of the same deadpan humor, with wonderfuil performances from the great ensemble cast
Number 9 Johnny Depp brings another phenomenal performance to Finding Neverland.
Number 8 is a film that really makes you think. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is easily the most original film of the year.
Number 7 Don Cheadle gives the performance of his life in Hotel Rwanda. It is an incredibly moving film that you shouldn't miss.
Number 6 The Aviator is packed with great performances most notably from Leonardo Decaprio and Cate Winslett.
Number 5 is my favorite animated film of the year. The Polar Express is magical and wonderful. It will be a Christmas classic for years to come.
Number 4 is the best comic book movie ever made. Spiderman 2. It was nearly perfect.
Number 3 is the latest from Clint Eastwood, who just keeps getting better and better as a director and an actor. Million Dollar Baby features performances from Hillary Swank and Morgan Freeman that should be nominated for Oscars, but the story is nothing short of great.
Number 2 is my pick for performance of the year. Jamie Foxx is Ray Charles. Ray is an outstanding movie but it's Jamie Foxx that should win the Oscar for best actor this year.
And my number one movie for 2004? Sideways. It has everything. Great performances, great script, cinematography, and it's just so fun to watch! For a change we have an Oscar winner that's not a depressing downer of a film. Don't miss Sideways whatever you do. It is the best movie of 2004.
