It is time to reflect on the films of the year 2002. So, now I present my Top 5 films of 2002. First, let's look at the bottom feeders. The Worst of 2002.
Number 5 was the worst kids movie of the year, in a year where we didn't have a lot of good kids films… Hey Arnold the movie was easily the worst animated film of the year. And with it's very poor animation and lame story, it wasn't even as good as the TV show it comes from.
Number 4 is Jason 10…this was rehashed stupidity in a series that has long over-stayed it's welcome.
Number 3: The Rules of Attraction…has a lot of attractive stars, but nothing attractive in the movie, and is a waste of good film.
Number 2 is Eddie Murphy's debacle, The Adventures Of Pluto Nash…It's a wonder he has a career after this…
and the Worst film of 2002…far and away the worst, is: Jackass the Movie. This featured scenes that are so repugnant that they make you physically ill. I felt sick to my stomach for two hours following this vomit-fest. I gave it zero stars…and it deserved them all….
Now lets move on to the best of 2002…
Number 5 is a tie. I like both of these movies so I didn't want to leave either of them out. Minority Report stars Tom Cruise as a cop set in the future where murder is able to be predicted. Steven Spielberg directed this smart and entertaining movie. The other film at number 5 is one that most of Boise hasn't seen yet… Nicolas Cage stars as twin screenwriters in Adaptation. A very funny inside look at Hollywood that also stars Meryl Streep.
At Number 4 is The Road To Perdition. This is more of a relationship film than a mob movie. Tom Hanks is wonderful, and Paul Newman may very well get an Oscar Nomination for it.
Tom hanks also stars in Number 3: Steven Spielberg's Catch me If You Can. This is very entertaining and kick-in-the-pants fun!
Number two will almost certainly get an Oscar nomination, if not a win for Julianne Moore. Far From Heaven is stirring and important, and is by far the best-looking picture of the year.
My vote for the best film of the year is the superb Gangs of New York. Martin Scorcese's brilliant masterpiece features a very strong cast with a magnificent performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, and a story that will knock you out. Don't miss this one. It will be nominated for numerous Academy Awards…
Now a couple of Honorable mentions…Best Animated Film was one you might have missed…Spirited Away is the most imaginative animated movie in years. One that will appeal to adults and kids alike.
Diane Lane deserves at least a best actress nomination for her work in UnFaithful. The scene where she struggles with the pleasure and horror of her infidelity still haunts me…
And Robin Williams' portrayal of Sy the photo guy in One Hour Photo is one of the best performances by any actor in many years…
